Today we learned all sort of stuffs, but specifically: So there’s 4 main theme in our learning today:
- Adding more context to our Bloom Taxonomy (through Derek’s Sharing)
- Adding steps in Pyramid of Learning (testing, certification, practice bots)
- Creating our Actualization Pyramid
- Diving deep a bit to our actualization pyramid.
A big part of our learning today coming from this talk: Veritasium: What Everyone Gets Wrong About AI and Learning – Derek Muller Explains
In summary the chunk of the talks evolve around this:
- Derek points out that we can’t and don’t need to revolutionize education, cause what we’re lacking is not the “medium” of learning instead the necessity of learning.
- In his word, “The world is full of heavy objects, but how many of us are ripped?”.
- I also wanted to point out that the reason of this being the cased is that our day to day attention now have been greatly divided, it’s the lack of focus and spending time to the right thing.
- Derek also points out that Teaching and Learning is like Working out. Teachers can be Personal Trainer, and class mates can be workout buddies. Learning is a social activity, (we can see how growth spurt of knowledge grow at the times where innovation in knowledge become a competition “Johann Challenge to others to prove Fastest Path of Straight Line”), learning together is much revolutionary than learning better.
- Learning Process Deep-Dive (System 1 and System 2, How Expert become expert, studies.)
- Chunking (working memory efficiency) - 4 chunks - related to neurological and physiological too.
- Long-term memory effectiveness (through pattern recognition)
- Using System 2 as a way to venture out to learn, so System 1 can be more efficient and productive.
- Desirable Difficulties is required for System 2, Increasing cognitive load (3 types of cognitive load, intrinsic, extraneous and germane)
- There’s no transferrable thinking skill instead, efficient way of using system 2 and system 1, expert can’t transfer learn, it’s pattern and so well developed very specific.
- Turning system 2 to system 1:
- Deliberate practice (make it smaller, slower, thinking focused, then slowly fasten it up, like Guitar)
- Repeat Effortful Practice Until Mastery.
- Scaffolding for system 2
- The role of AI:
- Immediate feedback on longer type of learning (theoretical, something can’t be proof except through test).
- Help with scaffolding and design of learning structure.
- Learnings in it’s model.
- Young Physicist vs. Experienced Physicist.
- Young , new and novel web of knowledge, thus easier to innovate
- Experienced, following historical progress of the science and at some points there’s dead ends, that still hasn’t work out.
- Young Physicist vs. Experienced Physicist.
This learning has been helping us greatly to understand importance factor in learning, to list out as easy:
- Social Activity
- Chunking memory 2 to memory 1
- etc etc
Also, there’s an addition to our pyramid of learning (bloom’s taxonomy). Referring to Actualization Pyramid, the foundation level is less practical and more on theoretical, it requires deep (reading, writing, linking, and testing), this level of theoreticalism is hard to proof coefficency, so what we do need to incorporate here is that we need to incorporate Testing and Certification.
We have another version of pyramid here Actualization Pyramid, where we create a pyramid to map out all important subjects and fundamentals and how they link to us becoming a better person that able to self actualize.
We also touch here and there and everywhere for our actualization pyramid, below are all resources that is useful for that.
